Fairy Tale Friday

With the sad passing of British actor Richard Briars recently, the girls got together to reminisce about some of his starring roles. The Good Life; Ever Decreasing Circles; and the narrator in Roobarb and Custard, a list of programmes all the Scandinavian and younger girls had never heard of.
After watching an episode of The Good Life (The one where Mr Briars hits the big 40 and has his mid life crisis)), the girls decide they should become aging hippies, and be more self-sufficient for their food. They do quite well already, with Gayle and the girls out chasing Haggis through the fields, and if opportunity occurs, stealing vegetables from those same fields to make such delightful dinners (Spam list of products from Monty Python). However, "you can always do more", said Gayle, and so plans were made for a vegetable patch, and for some fruit trees in the garden.
A section of the garden was put aside for the vegetable patch, Donna was put in charge of that. She volunteered when after visiting the last country fair, she saw the vegtable growing competition, and was amazed at the size cucumbers could grow to.....oh and the marrows !!!!!
An area near the outer wall was set up for the fruit tree’s, Lau was in charge of that.
They got together in the minibus and went to the local garden centre where they spent 5 minutes looking at all the nice garden ornaments, the pixies and fairies, the love seats and even the water features. Then another 2 hours sitting drinking tea and eating buns in the coffee shop.
At five minutes to five the girls panicked, raced around the shop unable to choose and then both Maritha and Claire grabbed a sales assistant and said we’ve £300 to spend, decide what’s best and send it to us tomorrow, we need to get back to work.
And so, the next day the truck arrived with their seeds and trees.  Lau had seen some nice small apple trees in the shop, but didn’t have enough time to get any. She assumed there’d be some on the truck. And there was one, but it was big. Not small like she expected, but big as in BIG. This tree was twenty foot high. The small holes she had dug in her end of the garden would not be big enough, so the girls rushed out with shovels to start enlarging one of the holes.  Debbie and Colette dug like whirling dervishes until they had a six foot deep hole. So deep that they had to get help to climb back out again.
The truck reversed, some burley and not very attractive men lifted the tree up and let it slip into the newly expanded hole. Then disaster!
Remember in FTF a few months ago, we were introduced to Arthur the mole who lived in tunnels underneath Teddy Bo Towers. Well the hole that the girls dug, was right above the entrance hall to his tunnel. Several tonnes of tree hit the middle of the hole and kept on going. That twenty foot tree lost six feet due to the hole depth, and a further ten feet as it crashed through the tunnels before coming to a stop, right next to Arthur’s side table and grandfather clock (that’s been with his family for three generations (which is about 12-15 human years).
Poor Arthur almost had a heart attack. However, before he passed out on the floor, he still had enough energy to call the council to complain.
The girls filled up the hole with earth to steady the tree, and all four feet that remained above the ground. It will be interesting to see what the council has to say about this.

We'll let you know how that goes next week.
While we wait for our fruit tree to grace us with some produce, the girls have made some gorgeous cards...x

Teddy Bo Tuesday

Hi! Colette here, a big welcome to yet another Teddy Bo Tuesday, the design team girls have been very busy making some fabulous cards for your delectation (just swallowed a dictionary LOL!), some of them soldiering on between fits of coughing, sneezing and wheezing.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to say goodbye and many thanks for your hard work and gorgeous creations to Karen and Trudie, who are both stepping down from the DT due to health problems, (the cold damp Scottish weather and draughty tower is not beneficial (sorry that dictionary I swallowed keeps repeating on me hehe!) to good health.

There is still plenty of time to enter our present challenge with the easy peasy theme of
Anything Goes
we would love to see your wonderful creations featuring our fabulous furry friends.

Anyhow, without any further rumbustious ramblings (dictionary again, sorry) from me, let's take a look at the
flabbergastingly fabulous concoctions of spectacularly amazing projects from the DT!!!
(note to self - never swallow a dictionary again, no matter how fed up of Haggis burgers you get!)

Fairy Tale Friday

There has been a lot of press recently in the UK about some famous musicians recreating the Beatles album ‘Please Please’. Originally recorded by the Beatles in just 12 hours, the musicians intended to re-record the album with the same strict timeline.

Now that got Gayle thinking. Could the girls record their favourite album in just 12 hours. After some humming and hawing, the girls decided that theVoulez Vous album by Abba just beat the Waterloo album by Abba, and the Super Trooper album by guess who….. Yupyou guessed it, it was Abba.

The first thing to do was to get all the equipment required together into one single small room. It turned out that an old draughty stone tower might not be the best location for sound recording, but after a few hours wandering around in the tower, the best room was selected. Unfortunately for those with a weak bladder, it was the toilet. The area was cleared as much as it could be, then their sound equipment (a laptop, a 1950’s BBC microphone, some old push button cassette recorders, and an old record player with a copy of the album) was stacked up inside the room.

With some free software off the internet, the girls managed to get a recording onto the laptop, and removed the Abba vocals. They were almost ready to go. The next big issue was who would sing what song. Each of the girls had their own favourites. But when a poll was taken, the girls all wanted the same few songs. In the end, after much to-ing and fro-ing, and bitching and moaning, names were drawn out of the hat. And so the track list was created.

Track 1 As good as new (3:22) Claire
Track 2 Voulez-Vous (5:11) Donna
Track 3 I have a dream (the toilets will stay clean) (4:44) Debbie
Track 4 Angeleyes (4:20) Sonia
Track 5 The king has lost his crown (3:30) Louise
Track 6 Does your mother know (3:13) Gayle
Track 7 If it wasn’t for the nights (5:13) Colette
Track 8 Chiquitita (5:26) Maritha
Track 9 Lovers (Live a little longer) (3:28) Trudie
Track 10 Kisses of fire (3:16) Lau

You can actually hear Gayle going to the toilet while the girls were recording‘I have a dream’, and then again during ‘Does your mother know’ which is why there was an instrumental section during that song as Gayle was meant to be singing it. Unfortunately due to copyright issues, we’re unable to let you hear the recordings. However, we can assure you that it consisted of top quality vocals, as well as vocals from XXXXX.

In between recordings the girls managed to make some wonderful cards...x

Fairy Tale Friday

Teddy Bo Towers is just 20 miles away from the City of Glasgow, and in 2014 it will host the Commonwealth Games. Now after the Olympics in London, the girls were so excited that they tried out a number of sports (unsuccessfully), and failed to represent their countries at the Olympics.
One of the big successes in London were the volunteers, and now Glasgow has asked for volunteers to help with the athletes and the general public when the games are running. With the deadline for applications approaching rapidly (28th February 2013), the girls shoved the tables in the main room together, and sat down to complete the forms.
Now ‘Crafting People’ are creative people, they don’t 'do' forms. In fact it’s just as well Gayle suggested they photocopied their forms first. Especially when Donna was completing her form and the box said ‘Sex’, and in the next box she wrote ‘Yes Please’. However things picked up, and the form filling was going well until they all got to the question about what volunteer tasks they would like to carry out during the event.
Donna was first, desperate to make up for her failing at the ‘Sex’ section of the document. “I want to help the athletes in and out of their clothes”, she said. The male ones only though.  Maritha said “I’ll work in the Food Service section. Should be great for getting free beer and buns”.
At this point Colette jumped up and down excitedly, “I want to do the logo for the games, their logo’s not very nice, it’s just a big green coloured ‘G’ with circles around it” (http://www.glasgow2014.com/) however, Gayle took her to the side and mentioned that they had already spent lots of money with lots of consultants designing the logo, and it’s unlikely that they’d change it.
Claire wrote down that she wanted to knit tracksuits for the athletes, and even some scarves for the athletes coming from warmer climates. She's got such a good, kind heart.
Gayle wrote on her application that she wanted to be involved in catering. She intended to bring her Haggis, Brussels Sprouts and Cranberry flan. A full meal with the three of the main food types, meat, vegtables and fruit.
And so the applications were sent off.
The girls all wait with baited breath to see if they'll be successful!!!!!

While we wait to hear back from the organisers the girls have been busy making more cards..x
